It was time for us to add a river cruise to our growing range of trips behind the Iron Curtain. Our team, with over 15 years of experience on European rivers, is ready to take you on a relaxing holiday on the Danube. The “Queen of Rivers” has as many faces as it has bends. The Danube flows past Vienna, inspiring chefs, composers and royal families and nourishing the most famous grape varieties in the world as it winds through the World Heritage Site of the Wachau Valley. The Danube passes through the spectacular landscapes of ten nations and passes through cities that seem to be fighting each other for the most beautiful architecture.
On our way along the Danube, it is almost as if past and present cannot agree on which is responsible: between Upper Austria and Central Hungary, it feels as if time changes as quickly as the view: Vienna, rose-colored and ornate, like a sweet and fresh confectionery. Here, oriental, German and French styles have left their mark. A city to fall in love with, to return to, to learn another side of. Budapest, so magnificent on one side and so turbulently beautiful on the other, with thermal baths, passionate music and Art Nouveau. Finally, Renaissance and gray Soviet-inspired architecture meet in Bratislava, while science fiction thrives alongside the baroque.
Cruise program
01
Day 1 – Embarkation Engelhartszell (Passau)
This is the starting point for your Danube cruise.
Our tip: To ensure you get off to a relaxed start, travel the day before your cruise begins and spend the night at one of our partner hotels.
This also allows you to explore the region around Passau. And when your ship sets sail on an exciting Danube cruise, you will already have your first adventures.
02
Day 2 – Vienna
This is a real highlight of your Danube cruise: Vienna, the capital of Austria with that extra-special something.
The locals sound like they're singing when they talk, "servus" is the nicest greeting, and Mozart and Strauss can be felt at every corner.
With its wealth of museums, galleries, palaces and castles, plus the State Opera and numerous theatres, the city has a lively cultural scene all year round. The Viennese are proud of their city – and rightly so!
03
Day 3 – Vienna
The Austrian capital has so much to offer.
From classic cafes to rides, the magnificent St. Stephen's Cathedral, historical sites such as the Spanish Riding School, the Imperial Palace and the Albertina Museum, but also avant-garde buildings such as
Hundertwasserhaus or the magnificent Sezession, there is sure to be a place to please all tastes.
04
Dag 4 – Esztergom/Budapest
Near the capital of Hungary, the city of Esztergom is located right on the banks of the Danube and can be admired directly from the river.
The castle tower and the mighty basilica form a fantastic view rising from a steep Danube bank.
This is a view you will definitely want to photograph during your Danube cruise.
05
Day 5 – Budapest
Do you know how many bridges there are in Budapest?
There are seven in total – and they stretch across the river between the districts of Buda and Pest.
The most famous is probably the Széchenyi Chain Bridge. Experience the stunning panorama of the Hungarian capital! And if you step out onto the sun deck of our ship, you have a wonderful view of Budapest's famous neo-Gothic Parliament Building.
The perfect way to experience a Pearl of the Danube.
06
Day 6 – Bratislava
Bratislava, home to around 450,000 inhabitants, is a young capital – actually the youngest in Europe.
Throughout the old town, you'll see traces of the Austro-Hungarian Empire wherever you go.
This quiet city with its rich Baroque and Rococo details, magnificent buildings and art and coffee houses is a perfect place to wander around, admire impressive sights, relax and unwind.
07
Day 7 – Milk
A visit to Melk, the “Gateway to the Wachau”, takes you to the Danube Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site and Austria’s premier wine region, where you can admire the glorious scenery.
Our ship winds past vineyards, magnificent Baroque castles, monasteries and castle ruins on its way back to Germany.
This is a region where cities and landscapes exist in perfect harmony.
08
